The Mushroom Difference
Is mushroom powder the same as an extract?
Ground mushroom powder is made by drying and milling the starting material. An extract uses a process such as water or alcohol extraction to separate selected compounds; extracts can also be dried into powders. Compare the species, ingredients and processing details rather than assuming one format is always more nutritious.
What is the difference between fruiting body and mycelium?
Mycelium is the fungus’s network of growing filaments; a fruiting body is its spore-producing structure. Their composition varies by species and growing conditions. Chaga conk is a different fungal structure. Check each product’s ingredient list for the material used, including any grain grown with the mycelium.
What does third-party testing tell me?
Independent laboratory testing can measure specified ingredients or contaminants in the sample tested. A useful report identifies the product or batch, test method and results. What it establishes depends on those details. Testing does not, by itself, guarantee that a product is safe for everyone or delivers a health benefit.
How should I compare mushroom products?
Start with the species, ingredient list, serving size and preparation directions. Then check whether the product contains ground material or an extract, and what its testing actually covers. Research on one species, extract or serving amount may not apply to a different product.
